RI Veterans Journal: DirectEmployers, USA Cares join forces on jobs
Diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder and unable to find a job, an Iraq war veteran recently facing home foreclosure was assisted by the USA Cares Jobs for Vets program, and he and his family were successfully relocated and he was given help in bridging the employment gap after completing his overseas service.
USA Cares assists veterans through a new partnership with DirectEmployers Association, a nonprofit consortium of more than 600 companies.
Jobs for Vets was established in March 2010 to reduce joblessness among post-9/11 veterans with a combination of financial assistance, employment referral and facilitation of resources.
The USA Cares program provides financial assistance to jobless veterans for such things as transportation to job interviews and relocation expenses. DirectEmployers Association also recently announced a new “Crosswalk” program for veterans.
Using their Military Occupational Specialty code and the Internet extension “.jobs,” veterans may access online employment listings pertinent to their military skills (for example, www.42f.jobs ).

Free New Mexico retreats for vets with PTSD and spouses
The National Veterans Wellness and Healing Center in Angel Fire, N.M., is offering free weeklong retreats this summer for veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder and their spouses. The retreats are open to all veterans and provide lodging, meals and therapy in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Individual and couples’ counseling are included, along with therapies such as acupuncture, yoga and massage therapy.
To qualify, veterans must be diagnosed with PTSD, must be in or have been in counseling, must have taken the PCL-M (a PTSD self-scoring military checklist ranging from 17-85) and scored 50 or higher and must have been referred by a VA Vets Center.
