Traditional custom colonial sits on wooded property on quiet cul-de-sac
In a section of Trumbull's historic Nichols, between Route 108 and Shelton Road, there is a maze of roads that leads to a quiet neighborhood in the Irongate Estates.
Nestled in that estate at 41 Cherry Gate Lane is a traditional colonial house, which was custom-built in 1992. The house is located near the end of Cherry Gate Lane, which is a cul-de-sac. It is a quiet, seemingly remote neighborhood, and yet it is only about five minutes from the Merritt Parkway, Route 8 and Route 25. It is relatively close to Shelton's Huntington center and Trumbull's downtown area on White Plains Road. It is also quite near to the Trumbull Historical Society and Nichols Park.
The street has a very neighborly feel, and the neighbors host block parties, according to the current owners.
There is a paved driveway lined in Belgian block and a long, red brick path to the main entrance.
The house is well-sited on a nearly three-acre parcel; a property that is a combination of wooded perimeter, open lawn and professional landscaping, including traditional and oak-leaf hydrangea, Japanese maple, a long hedge of boxwood, a 12-foot holly and numerous other plantings. Although the front of the property slopes upward slightly, the backyard is level.
The taupe clapboard house has white trim and black shutters and elements of the front entrance hint at some of the architectural details inside. A rounded faux balcony above the front porch has dentil molding. Inside, the rounded features continue in the gently curved staircase, the arched doorways into a first-floor hallway topped with keystones, and the Palladian window above the front entrance. The dentil molding is repeated in the crown molding of the formal living and dining rooms.
The front porch also has fluted columns. The front door is flanked by sidelights and topped with an arched transom, both of which have decorative leaded glass. The two-story foyer features marble flooring and double French doors into the living and dining rooms.
In the main living quarters there are 4,167 square feet of living space. The finished basement adds another 1,100 square feet and includes a game room, kitchenette with a sink and a half bath.
There are two fireplaces in the house. The first is in the living room and has a marble surround and a decorative white wood mantle. The family room fireplace is a dramatic floor-to-ceiling patterned red brick. This room also provides access, via sliding doors, to a wood deck. There is also a door to a screened-in three-season porch.

Wine Room
Wine tasting rooms date back to 6,000 BC, which means that there is a very long history of mankind enjoying fine wines in the comfort of a private cellar or room. In general, wine rooms are located at ground level or above, while wine cellars are built below ground. By either name, this location offers a carefully controlled environment in which to enjoy this noble beverage.
Once limited to the domain of wine collectors with extensive inventories, modern wine rooms can often be found in the homes of more casual wine enthusiasts. In fact, a wine room doesn’t require much in the way of space; a cozy wine tasting room might contain only a few racks for wine bottles along with a small table and a pair of comfortable chairs. Most wine rooms, however, tend to make a bit more of a statement in showcasing the wine enthusiast’s collection and providing a warm and welcoming space in which to savor fine wines.
One of the predominant materials used in most wine rooms is natural wood. Wood is ideal for the shelves that hold the wine bottles, and wood imparts a feeling of warmth and richness that fits hand in glove with the nature of the wine itself. You’ll find that many well-appointed wine rooms feature decorative wood trim to complete the room’s decor and give it a finished look. The addition of wood molding trim imparts a stylish embellishment that perfectly complements a wine room, completing an inviting environment for the wine enthusiast to enjoy wines with family members and guests.
It’s critical to remember that the climate within a wine room is of utmost importance in the preservation of a wine collection. Not only must the humidity level be kept at 50 to 80 percent, but the temperature in the room should be kept between 55 and 60 degrees Fahrenheit. Even a variation by a small amount from the recommended levels can adversely affect the stored wine’s color, flavor, and character.
A wine room with the proper humidity, temperature, and storage allows for the preservation of a collection of fine wines. A wine room with the warmth of natural wood furnishings and wood molding allows for the ultimate in enjoyment of the wines.
