Propane, natural gas cars fuel up across New Jersey
Gassing up a car doesn’t necessarily mean regular, plus, premium or diesel. As hybrids multiply and hydrogen fuel cell cars grab headlines, consumers also have lesser-known options similar to conventional gas cars, but potentially cheaper and cleaner to run.
Natural gas and propane cars and trucks have been around for years, but never commanded a great market share.
But that could change in coming years if gas prices stay high and federal grants keep building the infrastructure for the cleaner-burning fossil fuels.
A $15 million federal grant helped pay for a compressed natural gas fueling station that opened to the public this month at Waste Management’s Camden facility, and by the end of the year, it will help build six more stations around the state.
Yesterday in Trenton, Robert Nicholson pulled up to a conference in a propane-powered Hummer. The head of Oak Ridge-based Eastern Propane Corporation bragged that his ride could fuel up at 45 locations in the state, and 2,800 around the country.
"In coming years there’s going to be a lot more choices to make for people, a lot more options," said Chuck Feinberg, coordinator of New Jersey Clean Cities Coalition, which is overseeing the federal grant from the Department of Energy. "It’s not going to be one-thing-fits-all like it is with gasoline now."
The federal grant Feinberg oversees will pay for half of the cost of building the six natural gas stations in the state, and have inspired the businesses to commit another $30 million of their own money, he said.
That brings a variety of benefits to the state according to Lee Solomon, head of the Board of Public Utilities.
"Compressed natural gas represents an opportunity, both environmentally, economically and for national security reasons," Solomon said after the opening of the Camden station.
New Jerseyans with natural gas cars can also fuel up at the stations, which could offer a substantial savings over unleaded: the price of natural gas in Camden at the station’s opening was the $1.77 for the equivalent of a gallon of gasoline.
Still, drivers of natural gas cars will need to keep an eye on the fuel gauge, since only six stations will be open to the public by the end of the year, in Camden, Atlantic City, Egg Harbor, Trenton, Mount Arlington and Newark.
That’s a fraction of the locations where Nicholson can fill up his propane Hummer.
