Storm topples tree onto car, Holland house barely spared
It was a thunderous start to summer in West Michigan.
As the season officially changed on Tuesday, severe weather caused flooding in several parts of Ottawa County and trees to collapse — leading to some major damage.
Daane Smith, 24, was at his Central Avenue home when a tree in the front yard toppled into another tree, which landed on the family’s Saab 900 convertible, and landed inches from the side of the house. The cascade knocked out the power at about 11 p.m.
“I am guessing it got struck by lightning, because I saw a big flash and I looked out, and the tree was down,” Smith said. “It hit my mom’s convertible and is still on top of it.”
Smith said the car will need a new roof and driver’s side mirror at the very least — the car still was buried under the trunks of the two trees late Wednesday morning.
“I have never seen anything like this,” Smith said. “It was shocking. I am glad it didn’t hit the house and that no one was hurt.” It wasn’t the only damage in the area. Rain flooded parts of Ottawa County.
National Weather Service Meteorologist Wayne Hoepner said there was no evidence of a tornado touching down in north central Allegan County, despite reports, but that doesn’t mean there wasn’t one.
“If there was one, it was a weak one,” he said.
But the severe thunderstorms and high winds caused plenty of damage.
Allendale got 4.43 inches of rain, and there was flooding in several buildings at Grand Valley State University. Several events, including some final exams for the first summer term, had to be moved to drier buildings.
“We had about 5 feet of water in the basement of Lake Michigan Hall,” said Tim Thimmesch, Grand Valley State’s assistant vice president for facility services. “We pumped all the water out overnight. We had water in 10 buildings to different extents. We are trying to determine what can be saved. It is going to be a couple more days before we (know) the total damage.”
Holland and Grand Haven each got about a half inch of rain, Hoepner said, and lightning caused a barn fire in Georgetown Township.
In Grand Rapids, two hangars at the Gerald R. Ford International Airport were damaged. Wind ripped a hangar door away, sending some of them into the air inside the hangar. At least three people were injured and thousands were left without power, authorities said. The hangers were uprooted from their foundations.
