Wine Advenenture in Montepulciano

During a short excursion to Italy, my traveling companions and I visited Montepulciano, in the heart of Tuscany.

An ancient hill town, Montepulciano’s claim to fame in the world of wine is the production of the highly regarded Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, and its baby sister, Rosso di Montepulciano.

Our arrival in Montepulciano was dramatic. I was the last in line to leave the train – after Joyce Wilson, her brother Dan and Angela Mora – and just as I was about to exit, the train began to leave the station. To the horror of my traveling companions, I threw my luggage out and jumped off. One must remember that in small towns, the trains stop for only brief periods and one must exit quickly.

Antonio Guadioso from Vecchia Cantina di Montepulciano arranged for our stay at Agriturismo Sanguineto, www.sanguineto.it. The agriturismos that I have visited are ancient farmhouses that were converted into large apartments. They are especially welcoming after staying in cramped, expensive hotel rooms in city centers. The vistas from our apartments at Sanguineto were spellbinding, and the views appeared surreal and painted on a large canvas.

Shortly after our arrival, we were taken to a spectacular restaurant in Acquaviva, which had stayed open late for our 11 p.m. arrival. We cut short some courses, or we would have been there until 2 a.m!

While the food and service was excellent, most memorable was the presentation of the latest vintages of the Redi line of Vecchia Cantina di Montepulciano, online at www.vecchiacantina.com.

Vecchia Cantina is a large cooperative comprised of 400 families, and Redi is a smaller family-owned winery recently acquired by Vecchia Cantina. Redi is the oldest winery in Montepulciano and produces the top line of wines for Vecchia Cantina.

On this evening, we were treated to the most recent vintage of the Redi Rosso di Montepulciano, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Riserva. All of these wines are made with the Prugnolo Gentile grape, which is what the Sangiovese grape is called in Montepulciano. The Rosso di Montepulciano is the youngest of the wines, being ready for bottling and consumption by January of the year after harvest.
