Diamond Bar brothers kick-start garden learning center, dubbed 'The Growing Home'

DIAMOND BAR - Brothers Rishi and Ro Kumar have found an innovative way to eat healthier, save on grocery bills and teach others how to be sustainable - they've transformed their suburban home into a tropical garden labyrinth of homegrown fruits and vegetables.

For the past three years the pair has been remodeling their Diamond Bar home to be a garden and educational learning center, dubbed The Growing Home.

"This is something I'm passionate about," said Rishi, 22, who is spearheading the project. "That's why I'm trying to convert it into a business and eventually a nonprofit. This is everything I like to do coming to fruition."

With nearly 3,000 square feet of the home's back and front yards lush with 40 domestic and exotic fruit trees and 20 varieties of vegetables, Rishi is hoping to teach sustainability to residents of surrounding communities.

The family held its first workshop this weekend at the home, 24218 Doeskin Place, and will continue to do so every Saturday through mid-August.

Participants learn about drip irrigation, bee keeping, rainwater harvesting, resource-efficient gardens and green water installation, which uses water from washing machines, showers and bathroom sinks to water plants.

"We need to eat healthier food and eat stuff that's grown organically that's not getting all that pesticide and fertilizer," Rishi said. "This is something that people are starting to realize. It's about using less resources."

Rishi's interest in farming grew after he went to India for six months to study agriculture.

"The majority of the world is involved in agriculture," said Ro, 24. "About two-thirds of humanity still does agriculture."

In March, the brothers began to transform their backyard into a miniature farm, growing zucchinis, watermelon and tomatoes, along with decorative plants, half of which are edible.

I understand that these are often found in caravans and am considering buying one for the much smaller home I am about to move to. They cost between 70 and 100 which is great but I cannot fathom out (from looking at pictures of them on Amazon) how one would empty them. Do they need manual emptying or is there a hose which goes into the sink? The website does not give this information.

If anyone here has one or has used one could you please give me personal review as to whether they are worth owning for regular use. i'm fr0m philippines.and we are used to be m0re caring 0n our hygiene and also our cl0thing.ive tried handwashing and machine washing both manual and auto matic.for my experience i w0uld rather prefer the manual machine,c0z we handwash and machine wash at the same time and that means you will a nice and clean clothing all the time.
