Over 700 at Beemer rally
On Saturday afternoon, the Hotchkiss FFA Chapter and Alumni organized the field events. The overall winner of the games was Bob Farris of Wisconsin who won three out of five events. Farris won the Slowest Race and the Obstacle Course. The Statue of Liberty had a passenger holding an inverted plunger filled with water. The water was carefully measured before and after the ride. Bob Farris and his passenger Claire Damecour of Phoenix, Ariz., spilled the least amount of water to earn them first place. The Cone and Ring Toss was won by Vince Debes of Arizona and Becky Morgan of Kansas. Colorado took top honors in the Water Balloon Lancing with first place won by Randy Meyer of Colorado Springs and Luke Smith of Paonia. Smith managed to get his opponents wet by hitting them with water-filled balloons. John Vaughn of Mesa, Ariz., and Bill Manda of Youngstown, Ohio won first place in the frozen T-shirt contest.During the closing ceremonies Ellen Smith and her helpers at the Paonia Teen Center were thanked as were the Paonia American Legion for the beer garden, Howard Berkman for a fantastic Friday night concert, The Black Bridge Winery for food and a wine tasting, pilot Larry Garrett who gave a lucky Beemer an hour plane ride, the Hotchkiss FFA Chapter and Alumni for taking on the task of the field events at the last minute, the Paonia baseball and track teams for Saturday's dinner, and the Redwood Arms for donating $100 to the club.
With rain drops falling on their heads and dark clouds and thunder above, the closing ceremonies were shortened to the bare essentials. Awards were given for those who came the most miles (2,522 miles from Conway, Mass.), the oldest female rider (70 years young from Manitou Springs), the oldest male (85 years old from Texas), the youngest male (16 years old), youngest female (27 years old) and youngest passenger (a four-year-old who rode in a side car from Colorado Springs).
This was the 22nd year the Beemers have held their rally in Paonia.
The final night of entertainment featured the band Mountain Magic in the gazebo.
