Residents vindicated over Airport Link noise

Kalinga Park residents have been dealing with constant noise since August 2009 when Airport Link construction moved to a 24 hour operation.

Their concerns have now been vindicated.

Ombudsman, Phil Clarke has upheld a complaint, finding that residents weren't adequately informed and there has been no meaningful definition of excessive noise nor adequate monitoring of noise levels.

The president of the Kalinga Wooloowin Residents' Asssociation (KWRA), Brian Nally told ABC's Anne O'Keefe residents were assured by the previous infrastructure minister, Paul Lucas, that construction would only be between the hours of 6:30am and 6:30pm.

Mr Nally says the association went to the ombudsman after having no satisfaction with the coordinator-general's department.

"We felt it was the only course left. We tried all the normal, front door approaches and so we then raised it with the Ombudsman."

Secretary of the KWRA, Greg Davis says residents were relying on being able to recover from the project noise during the night.

"There's just no downtime," says Mr Davis.

Mr Clarke's report includes 24 recommendations aimed at improved noise monitoring/management and communication with residents.

Construction of the Airport Link is scheduled for completion in mid 2012.
