I-Cubs Finish Homestand With 8-1 Win

DES MOINES -- The Iowa Cubs (41-43) provided plenty of offense behind a pitching gem by Jay Jackson as they defeated the New Orleans Zephyrs (39-45) 8-1 Sunday night at Principal Park. Iowa went 10-3 on this season-long 13-game home stand, and the Cubs have now won 10 of their last 11 games.

Welington Castillo led off the second inning with a single and moved to third on a Marwin Gonzalez double. With one out, Jonathan Mota put the Cubs on the board with an RBI-single. Gonzalez came around to score on a Fernando Perez RBI-single to put Iowa up 2-0. Gonzalez finished the game 3-for-4 with a double and a run scored.

In the fourth inning, the Cubs scored three unearned runs off Zephyrs' starter Sean West. Mota reached on a base-hit with one out for Iowa. Jackson put down a bunt trying to advance Mota into scoring position, but New Orleans' catcher Brad Davis threw high to second base and both Mota and Jackson were safe. Perez followed with a ground ball to third that the Zephyrs' second basemen could not handle, which loaded the bases on the second error in as many plays. Tyler Colvin then singled sharply to right field driving in Mota and Jackson and advancing Perez to third. DJ LeMahieu capped the scoring on the frame with a sac fly to score Perez.

Perez and Bryan LaHair added solo home runs in the sixth and seventh inning, respectively, for the Cubs. Perez, LeMahieu, Castillo, and Mota had two hits a piece on the night.

The Zephyrs got on the board in the top of the ninth inning after back-to-back doubles by Matt Dominguez and Jesus Merchan putting an end to Jackson's complete game shutout bid. Justin Berg pitched the final two-thirds of an inning to close out the game.

Jackson was removed from the game with one out in the ninth to a standing ovation by the 12,153 in attendance at Principal Park. He scattered eight hits over eight and one-third innings and gave up the lone run to New Orleans. The Cubs have won three straight games in which Jackson has started. This was his third quality start of the season, and the first since June 1 at Nashville. Jackson contributed at the plate as well with an RBI-single in the eighth inning for the Cubs' final tally.

West pitched six and one-third innings and gave up seven runs (four earned) on ten hits. He struck out six and walked one batter for New Orleans.

Oh yeah she is also a self-proclaimed historian on the US Founding Fathers and US history. The sad truth she will lie to get her way, what honor is there in that? But if you manipulate our US history and double down when you are found out, well don’t go crying to Fake News when you lose. Kind of like the Former half-term Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin (Most recent quitter of her Bus Tour to restore America). We remember what happen when after “W” manipulate Florida (w/ the help of brother Jebb) to win the presidency and his failure to win any of the two wars he started that devastated our treasury and ruined our economy for the next 50 years. If the GOP thinks that Michele Bachmann is the answer, good luck with that. After her “John Wayne” mishap and Tom Petty, calling her a thief, well you know, same old Bachmann, you have a winner GOP.
