Sunday Homes: View from Above

— When Tom and Zandy Benefield decided to sell their family home and downsize, they decided uptown Corpus Christi's Atlantic Lofts would become their new home. Designing the layout was a labor of love for Tom, who, as the general contractor, was there to supervise the build out of the unit. Interior designers Janet Lacy and Ivette Sullivan of Shoreline Designs created the interior finishes. The result is a wonderful space with panoramic views from the downtown skyline to the Harbor Bridge and port area. The Benefields' new uptown home is filled – from the tile floors to the open steel beamed ceilings – with family heirlooms and memories.

Why do you love your home?:Tom was the general contractor and designed the layout – where walls would be, where our own furniture would be placed. He researched on the internet extensively, reading reviews on everything from tankless water heaters to range vent hoods. He was here everyday supervising the subcontractors, a true labor of love.

Why did you decide on this home...We were ready to downsize and move closer to work.

Best home project I've completed here and why: Using all our own furniture by updating chairs by re-upholstering them, and new comforters and pillows for the bedrooms.

Something no one knows about my home... The windows and sliding door are rated for 200 mile-per-hour winds.

A home item I can't live without:My Rachel Ray-inspired kitchen pantry – I'll never have expired canned goods again.

My home's best feature... The fabulous view of Corpus Christi Bay and glorious sunrises.

A home I'd love to see inside: The White House.

A current home trend I like: Opening the kitchen area to include the dining and living areas.

Three words that describe my home: Chic, warm, comfortable.

What I like most about my home: Not paying huge water bills to keep the lawn alive during this drought.

My home's most complimented feature: The lower breakfast bar on the kitchen island – very comfortable with feet on the floor.

Best home advice I ever received... Hiring a professional interior designer. Janet Lacy and Ivette Sullivan, who own Shoreline Designs, were very creative incorporating the interior finishes. Their use of glass tile, modern cabinets and paint selections brought the modern and industrial feel to the loft. Their selections created an ambiance that tied everything together.
