Spin stories out of your region's used-vehicle market
The story was widely played and you can bet that a good portion of your readers are scoping out the vehicles in their own driveways, wondering what the market will bear. It’s a great peg for a fresh look at the used-car market (and related businesses) in your region.
Most such stories focus on the consumer angle, which is fine. But for a fresh twist, take a look at how businesses small and large are using used vehicles. As this report from market research firm R.L. Polk & Co. indicates, “Used commercial vehicle registrations hit record levels in 2010.” In fact, some of the stats are rather amazing, including the following from Polk:
“This represents an increase in used commercial vehicle registrations of 21.7 percent over 2009. With this increase, used commercial vehicle registrations accounted for nearly 65 percent of the total commercial vehicle market (new and used) in 2010. This is the first year registrations of used commercial vehicles have exceeded 600,000 units.”
It sounds like the highest demand for used units is among the largest (“Gross Vehicle Weight 8″) trucks, which we usually think of as semi- or tractor-trucks. Makes sense, but that still leaves a lot of transactions going on among smaller trucks and other vehicles. Talk with dealers as well as companies in your area about sales trends and check the classifieds or Auto Trader-type publications to find owners using the DIY approach.
Back on the consumer front, talk with lenders and financing companies about loan trends. The credit reporting firm TransUnion reports that first-quarter 2011 auto loan delinquencies were the lowest since it began keeping score in 1999 at less than half a percent. That’s pretty amazing and like most economic data, probably not the great news it appears to be at surface glance. Slower loan activity probably plays as much of a role as does conscientious borrowing, which ties into the used-car / keeping cars longer angle. TransUnion offers some really interesting stats in this release along with links to an interactive map showing how your state stacks up to others in auto loan delinquencies and other borrowing metrics. (Bookmark that one!) Talk with creditors about how lending parameters for used vehicles differ from lending on new cars.
