Glenmorangie launches private collection

The Glenmorangie Company paid tribute to its art of whisky creation with the launch of the Glenmorangie Private Editions – a prestigious series of innovative whiskies for the true connoisseur. As there is a very limited supply of these creations in South Africa, further enhancing their exclusivity, Glenmorangie is organising special tastings in Johannesburg and Cape Town for true fans, via the Glenmorangie South Africa Facebook page – bringing a cutting edge to its proud history.

The launch revived the company’s popular tradition of limited edition releases. From now on, a ‘whisky gem’ will be released every year as part of the Glenmorangie Private Edition Collection, starting with the first two expressions in this series: Glenmorangie Sonnalta PX and Glenmorangie Finealta.

Having spent 10 years maturing in American white oak casks, Sonnalta (Scottish Gaelic for “generous”) is finished in Pedro Ximenez sherry casks for its final two years of extra maturation, creating a subtly complex and delicate spirit.

On nosing Sonnalta PX, the first impression is of dark chocolate, sun-dried raisins, treacle and demerara sugar. Further aromas emerge as a delicious and heady mix of hot chocolate and rich aromatic coffee, with a spoonful of honey and a bowlful of toasted almonds.

The addition of water releases a symphony of luscious fruity, sweet and warming aromatics: the scent of red cherries emerges from a rich fruitcake alongside syrupy prunes, sunburnt raisins and sweet flowering currants. Hints of cocoa, toast and leather bring simmering warmth.

Sonnalta PX is poised to be a favourite among the cognoscenti, as it has already won numerous awards such as Best New Scotch Whisky Brand in Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible 2010, Gold at the 2009 International Spirits Challenge, and Gold at the 2009 Spirits Masters.

Finealta (Scottish Gaelic for “elegant”) is a painstaking recreation of an ancient Glenmorangie recipe dating back to 1903.

Distillery archives show that during the early 1900s, this dram was served in the American Bar of The Savoy, London’s most prestigious hotel, during La Belle Époque and at the height of Art Nouveau, the first modern art movement of the 20th century – making this whisky a window onto a grander age, where society demanded a drink of both depth and distinction.

Finealta has distinctive vanilla and citrus notes and hints of mandarin, lime and breakfast marmalade on toast. The final touch is a hint of peat that originates from when the distillery used to dry its malted barley in a peat-fired kiln.

im a bit confused with the water cooling ? on the mile high distilling website, the distiller assembly instructions state that the water flow should start at the bottom of the reflux, out the top of the reflux, in to the bottom of the condencer then out of the top of the condencer to the waste, dose it realy matter which way it flows? ? ? is there a recommended flow rate ? ? ?

@MrHarry46 Raschig rings are pieces of tube (approximately equal in length and diameter) used in large numbers as a packed bed within columns for distillations and other chemical engineering processes. They are usually ceramic or metal and provide a large surface area within the volume of the column for interaction between liquid and gas or vapour. Raschig rings are named after their inventor, the German chemist Friedrich Raschig. Wikapedia

purpose is to increase surface area. increases efficiency of condenser. you can pack a condenser with anything that isn’t reactive with whatever you’re refluxing, in this case copper “wool” is cheap and efficient, as are the ceramic rings. You can pack a column with broken glass in some scenarios. As long as its non-reactive, increases surface area, and doesn’t compress into a plug, it’s a candidate.
