On September 5, 1972, Black September terrorists attacked the Israeli delegation to the Munich Olympics, 11 Israelis, five guerrillas and a policeman were killed in the siege.

In 1774, the first Continental Congress assembled in Philadelphia.

In 1793, the Reign of Terror began during the French Revolution as the National Convention instituted harsh measures to suppress activities against revolutionaries.

In 1836, Sam Houston was elected President of the Republic of Texas.

In 1914, the first battle of the Marne, resulting in a French-British victory over Germany, began during World War I

In 1939, four days after war had broken out in Europe, President Franklin D. Roosevelt issued a proclamation declaring American neutrality in the conflict.

In 1986, four pirates who had seized a Pan Am jumbo jet on the ground in Karachi, Pakistan, opened fire when the lights inside the plane failed, a total of 22 people were killed in diversion.

In 1991, the 35th Symposium of Naval Aviation, organized by the Tailhook Association in Las Vegas open.(The rally was marked by reports that dozens of people, mostly women, were sexually assaulted or otherwise harassed during the meeting.)

Ten years ago: Mexican President Vicente (HIV-SEN'-tay) Fox arrived at the White House as the first state visitor of the Bush presidency. Peru attorney general filed homicide charges against Alberto Fujimori, linking the former president to two massacres by paramilitary death squads in the early 1990s. (Fujimori was subsequently sentenced for crimes against humanity and sentenced to 25 years in prison). Heywood Hale Broun sportscaster died in Kingston, New York, at age 83.

Five years ago: A cook was charged with shooting and dismembering the owner of a bed and breakfast Maine-and three others in a weekend Labour Day Rampage (Christian Nielsen was sentenced to prison life). Felipe Calderon was declared president-elect in Mexico, after two months of uncertainty over a disputed election. Boeing executive Alan Mulally was named president and CEO of Ford Motor Co., succeeding Bill Ford, great grand-son of the founder Henry Ford.
