When Harry Met … Karon Owens

She and her husband, Tommy, have been maried for 53 years and are a happy couple. But it almost was not to be because of life-threatening medical problems each endured.

Two weeks before her senior year at Albertville High School, Karon married Tommy. Household chores on a busy farm notwithstanding, she kept up her studies and graduated at the top of her class.

When their youngest son developed severe asthma, they were referred to a specialist in Mobile, and the family moved in 1963 to the Port City for his treatment.

Tommy found work with Chevron Oil. Karon, who always wanted to be a teacher, enrolled in studies at the University of Mobile.

Then, Tommy became ill. Doctors found he had a cyst on his brain, which meant a long and delicate surgery to remove it. He was out of work for a year.

“Chevron paid all my bills and kept me on half-salary during my recovery,” Tommy said.

He eventually went back to work. He chose a buyout after 30 years with the company and retired in 1993.

“We always said that when he retired, we would move back to Aroney,” Karon said.

They settled in to become part of the community with farms all around. Karon developed a large repertoire of skills that had begun in her childhood, including watercolor painting, pen-and-ink drawings and work in oils and acrylics. Abstracts are a specialty, as is her hobby of wood-burning.

Three years ago, Karon was the subject of an article in UAB’s e-health magazine. Writer Tara Hulen described the facts leading up to her being selected as a participant in a National Institutes of Health study, Carotid Revascularization Endarterectomy versus Stenting Trial.

“She ended up in a ground-breaking study and might have avoided a stroke — all because two other medical problems inspired her to get a general checkup,” Hulen wrote.

“Within two months in 2006, Karon had to have her gallbladder removed, then two lumps removed from her breast, which, fortunately, turned out to be benign.

Even though she felt fine after all that, she decided it was probably a good idea to get an overall physical from her primary care physician. It was.”

That is when Karon learned she had a bruit, a distinctive “whooshing” sound in the carotid artery in the neck easily detected with a stethoscope.

The carotid artery supplies blood to the head, and a bruit is an indication there is a fatty buildup in the artery called atherosclerois, a major factor for stroke.
