EVERYDAY PEOPLE: KLKS' Collins enjoys life on the airwaves

Breezy Point - After a lifetime in broadcasting, John Collins is rarely nervous when he slips switch soundboard to talk to listeners of Radio KLKS to Breezy Point.

If he did, Collins would remember that he is only talking to Fritz, the former pharmacist Pequot Lakes.

Collins is a graduate Motley High School in 1966 and raised on a cattle farm.He said he always wanted to grow as a broadcaster and got his chance to 19 years while studying in first year, then at Bemidji State College. He met a guy from Texas in the speeches of his class who was a presenter on Radio KBUN in Bemidji. Collins said his friend wanted to leave Bemidji to return to his girlfriend to marry, but his boss told him he would find his own replacement first. He offered the job to Collins, who happily accepted the concert $ 1.40 an hour.

Collins has worked part time on the air at the radio station through college, spinning records that includes music waltzes, country, rock and jazz - a wide range of music and entertainment.

"I always wanted to be in broadcasting. I'm too lazy to work and too nervous to steal, "Collins joked during his shift at KLKS last week.

He was drafted into the Army after college and spent a year working for the Armed Forces Radio and Television in Thailand. He worked mainly in radio, but television did voiceovers and has worked in the projection booth when the show is based movies on the troops.

"I had so much fun that I feel guilty about it," said Collins of his military experience from August 1971 to August 1973.

After the service, Collins took a variety of jobs, including as an assembler and sell water softeners.

"Yes, I became a Culligan man," said Collins.

While working for Culligan in Brainerd, he went out on a call to a house of a woman, a teacher who needed a water softener. This woman turned out to be went to college with him in Motley.
