Turner Hall Farm Campsite (01229 716420; LA20 6EE) in Seathwaite,
Cumbria. What a fantastic place to get away from it all. Camp amongst the
rocks and marvel at the views. You feel like you are the only ones there,
back to basics but the facilities are more than adequate and are spotlessly
clean. The owners are extremely friendly and a mine of information about
walking in the valley from the site and if you're interested will tell you
about the farm as well. If you don't want to cook it's only a ten minute
walk to the nearest pub for great food, beers and atmosphere. Mr D Deane
Hooks House Farm (01947 880283; YO22 4PE; www.hookshousefarm.co.uk ) in Robin Hoods Bay, North Yorkshire. We return time and time again and the site is open all year round. Stunning views over the bay and a short walk to the local shops and pubs. Fridge, freezer, kettle and microwave are all provided to campers free of charge in addition to showers, toilets, and washing up facilities. It is very well run and the "extra mile" approach starts as soon as you arrive. For those with a van, the owner will assist (if you want him to) until everything is level and plugged in. On one occasion we were due to stay for the weekend but a heavy snow fall hit the east coast overnight. The owner phoned and texted (from the details I had provided when booking) to advise me not to travel, even though this resulted in a lost booking. We're going this weekend and can't wait! Pinkhill Lock (01865 881452; OX29 4JH; www.visitthames.co.uk ) near Eynsham in Oxfordshire. Five pitches underneath chestnut trees on an island in the Thames. The setting is beautiful, the lock-keeper and his wife are very welcoming and it is definitely the place to get some peace and relative quiet (the sheep are quite noisy!). We did a bit of dad and son bonding, had the site to ourselves and neither of us wanted to come home! There is a shower and a toilet. Fires are allowed. NB: You do need to walk the last mile so travel as lightly as you can. Mr A Biggs
