As I See It: Accentuate the positive, eliminate the negative

How do you look at life? At the world? Is the glass half full or half empty? Are you an optimist or a pessimist about most things?

Challenging questions, right? What are the answers? Well, I’m not a sociologist (not a social animal, but social). Or even an amateur adjustment attitude guy. (But I believe in having a good attitude). So my answers to all these challenging questions is a personal one. Strictly personal.

They are conclusions that have guided me throughout my life. Optimism is in my DNA. My career as an athlete, actor, advertising executive and writer was and is always influenced and motivated by accentuating the positive, and never ever allowing the negative to deter me in doing what I wanted to do. In achieving what I wanted to achieve.

Now that you know where I stand on the subject of optimism over pessimism, let me elaborate on this subject. Where do I start in discussing positive versus negative in the way people make decisions that affect their lives?

Strange as it be, I’ll start with the negative. Why? It’s easier for someone to be negative. It’s less brain-churning to believe that something can’t be done or achieved. How’s that? Well, folks often avoid making decisions with the hope that they fade away. It’s easier to give up when not optimistic about the outcome, and are unable or unwilling to accentuate the positive. People convince themselves it won’t work out. And more likely don’t believe they can work it out. Its easy to be negative.

Now accentuating the positive, being optimistic and confident is difficult, truly brain-churning. In a word, hard. Your belief system must be strong enough to allow you to believe you can do something about anything, even if others say you can’t. The positive approach can overcome all the negativity.

I’m not advocating false bravado, but an honest belief that buying into the positive eliminates any negative thoughts that can creep in. Negative thoughts create doubt in your mind. Positive thoughts keep doubt out.

Sounds simplistic, I know. And you may be right, yet there are any number of men and women in various professions who swear by and put into play a positive approach for achieving success. Athletes (professional and amateur), entertainers, artists, writers and scientists (Galileo, Darwin and Newton come to mind) who had to deal with naysayers. Fought off the negative doubters. And let’s not forget those entrepreneurs, who began with a dream in their garage, and became successful entrepreneurs with a mind set in a positive set. Understand that I’m not dismissing the need for hard work and dedication to the job at hand, but from my perspective, my experiences, being positive and optimistic is the ultimate difference for all those achievers.

Go Figure!: Accentuate the Positive; Eliminate the Negative

Let's examine  4 x -2 which means four sets of -2.  Using the number line above, start at zero and move left by twos - four times. Voila!  The answer is  -8 .  Locate -8 on the number line above.  Now try  3 x -2 .  Again, begin at zero on the number line, but this time move left by twos - three times. Ta-dah!  We arrive at -6 .  Therefore,  3 x -2 = -6 . I have been teaching since "the earth cooled". My husband is also a teacher, and this year, together, we have been teaching for 70 years! I currently teach "mathphobics" at a local community college. I have either taught or been a supervisor of student teachers in about every grade. My speciality is math, and I believe that anyone can learn this dreaded subject if taught correctly. My classroom is always energetic and includes many hands-on activities. Occasionally I sing, show math movies, and even do a few math cheers!
