Another wacky and weird week in Louisville
Another weird and wacky week has come and gone here in Derby City. Once again, we present our readers with some notable examples of weirdness, to demonstrate why the slogan “ Keep Louisville Weird ” is just right for our little town on banks of the Ohio. The following little news items were reported in the media over the past week:
Attention, K-Mart shoppers. Louisville police were called to the Kmart on Outer Loop, near New Cut Road, around 5:30 p.m., last Saturday, on reports that 36-year-old Trevor Smith was causing trouble and engaging in "odd and erratic behavior." The cops told Trevor to leave the store, and strongly suggested that he not return.
Some time later, the LMPD was called again by the K-Mart folks, saying Trevor had returned. When the cops arrived, Trevor allegedly began taking off his clothes. The arrest report indicates that Mr. Smith admitted to taking Xanax earlier in the day, and police concluded that he was "an extreme danger to himself." He was charged with criminal trespassing, disorderly conduct and public intoxication, but authorities may have difficulty pinning anything on him.
Breaking up is hard to do. On Tuesday, police arrested 23-year-old Derek Jackson, charging him with criminal mischief, for allegedly doing more than $10,000 worth of damage to the home and property of Larry Decamp. According to an arrest report, Derek went to Larry’s home and threw paint on one of Larry's dogs, slashed his furniture, put two holes in his swimming pool, threw a brick at his car, poured bleached and painted 113 pieces of his clothing, poured paint over two kitchen counters, the stove, the floor, a hallway, a bedroom, an office, the living room, a computer, a desk, a laptop, a laptop carrying case, a wireless mouse, an MP3 player, carpets, and a brand new stripper pole. Even the cushions on the love seat were slashed. According to the cops, Larry is Derek’s “ex-boyfriend.”
“A brand new stripper pole?” Quelle domage!
Moon over Portland. On Wednesday, Louisville police responded to yet another situation in which the suspected perp felt the need to strip. Over in the Portland neighborhood, the cops stopped 22-year-old Elizabeth J. Kennell, around 8:20 p.m., as part of a narcotics investigation. At that point, according to police reports, Elizabeth pulled her pants down and started screaming in the middle of the street. She was evidently reticent to assist the police with their inquiry, and became angry, pulling down her pants and her underwear, exposing herself to numerous bystanders. She was arrested and charged with first-degree indecent exposure and second-degree disorderly conduct.

A great Portland moment (Jack Bog's Blog)
When we heard that Black Joe Lewis was coming to the Portland blues festival , our ears immediately perked up. Jimi Hendrix and James Brown are dead, but Black Joe is carrying on spectacularly in both traditions. With his band, the Honeybears, he's been known to blow out clubs all over the country. And here in Portland, he was allotted two sets at the tightly choreographed blues fest -- a main stage hour coming up this afternoon at 5, and an "after hours" set last night at the Marriott, across the street from the main event.
We fumbled the ball in getting a ticket for last night's show, but our good friend Chris was on the case, and next thing we knew we were in the hotel ballroom waiting for Black Joe to step up on the stage.
As expected, based on the previous time we saw him, Black Joe tore it up. His band appears to have lost a keyboardist, but at least for last night, it gained a dancer. Her name was Ruby. This seemed to fit right in with the title of the band's new album, "Scandalous." The highlights of the night were "Bobby Booshay," "She's So Scanadalous," and "Booty City," but you could tell these guys were holding the even better stuff in reserve for the big crowd this afternoon. God bless 'em, they made a righteous noise.
By the way, please forgive the quality of the photo at the top of this post. It was taken on a cheap cell phone, and the floor on which we were standing was bouncing up and down, in time with the music, pretty vigorously.
We're proud to say we attended the very first Portland blues festival, when it was held up toward the other end of the park. The logistics of what it's morphed into in the 20-plus years since are pretty complicated, and if memory serves, it's been nine years since we last ventured down there. But sneaking in and out of the Marriott for one band was easy, and so rewarding. We're definitely going to be feeling a pull in that direction this afternoon.
