Paul Byrne to lead Poway chamber's board
The event was held as part of the chamber’s monthly mixer, rather than a separate dinner. It was Byrne’s decision, basically because of tough economic times.
He said the upcoming year will be much like a “19th Century barn raising,” when people partnered to help one another.
Despite the economy, Byrne believes the year will be a good one, as those in business rally to help each other.
“It’s going to be a no-frills approach — we’re not going to waste any money,” he said. “Being frugal is a good habit to have in these economic times.”
His main focus about almost anything chamber-related comes down to “how can we make it better.”
Some of his goals for the year include following through with the results of the Business Summit, sponsored in January by the City of Poway and the chamber.
Business students at Cal State San Marcos are finishing a business-to-business directory to help local businesses know more about each other, Byrne said.
That was one of the top requests from business leaders, he added.
Expect a chamber effort to create membership packages with an emphasis on marketing techniques.
“I think the chamber can be the conduit that allows businesses to do more business,” Byrne said.
Another goal is to enhance street fairs, how to attract more visitors and what needs to be changed to make it more interesting.
“I keep preaching to chamber members that we need to make everything we do relevant to our members,” he said.
More online services will be added in the upcoming year, another way for businesses to improve their marketing and selling power.
“They can use those services at work, or at home, instead of taking time away from the office,” Byrne said. “We want to take several things to the next level.”
Byrne also recognizes Goyochea’s leadership in helping organize a new approach to the chamber’s Business Expo, which was held at Barona Casino in early June.
“The people who attended loved the venue,” Byrne said.
While the new chairman said he heard some objections about the location, he added, “We have to take risks — nothing is ever in concrete.”
Byrne has spent a 20-plus year career directing IT and finance for companies. He is CEO and founder of San Diego-based ReadyTECH.
